Ss. Peter annd Paul's C.B.S. Band
In 1993 Ss. Peter and Paul's C.B.S. Band was established. When fifth class boys who were learning the recorder expressed an interest in playing the trumpet we set about organising fundraising events to purchase same. A short time later lesssons began with four students who shared the one trumpet!
Progress was rapid and their enthusiasm infectious. Others were soon clamouring for an opportunity to learn. Fundraising began in earnest and we purchased a flute and trombone. We even received a donation of a second hand clarinet.
We could now accommodate 16 players and the band was born. In 1994 we participated in Cór Fheile na Scol in Cork for the first time. We were very warmly received and encouraged to return.
Some twenty three years later we now boast a Senior Band with more than forty members who play trumpet, flute, clarinet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, saxophone and percussion as well as a Junior Band with twenty members. Instruments are no longer shared.
We rehearse weekly after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and perform annually at the Co Fheile in City Hall Cork and at various other events throughout the year including ceremonies e.g. First Communion and Confirmation, playing carols for charity on the street at Christmas, visiting Old Folks and generally enhancing special occasions in the school.
Inn June 2006 we recorded our own school C.D. In June 2007 we were honoured to perform in our school hall with the Band of the First Southern Brigade.
Many of our members continue to play music in the local secondary schools or progress to Banna Chluain Meala. Indeed several have gone on to pursue music as a career.
In 2012 we entered the inaugural Walton's Music for Schools Competition. We were delighted to be selected to perform in the National Concert Hall in the finalist's concert.
In 2013 we celebrated the band's 20th anniversary with two great concerts- the first with Banna Chluain Meala and the second with the army band.
In 2015 we were once again selected to perform in the National Concert Hall as finalists. On May 15th we gave the performance of our lives and were awarded 1st place and a prize of €3000 worth of music equipment.
We are grateful to our many ex-members who have returned over the years to assist with tutoring the band. Those who have helped include Emmet Donlon, Ed Morrissey, Jamie Millea, Anthony Wall, Charlie Millea, Darragh Johnson, Ronan Ruth and Elliot Fennessey.
